![]() Stonehurst Manor |
Set on a secluded hillside among tall pines, Stonehurst Manor
was originally part of the summer estate of carpet baron Erastus Bigelow. At his death,
the property passed to his only daughter, Helen Bigelow Merriman, who was responsible for
the current "English Country Manor" style you see there today...a front door
large enough to drive through, hand-carved oak woodwork, leaded glass windows, a multitude
of stone fireplaces throughout the Manor, the spacious gardens, screened tile porch, and
the imposing stone porte cochere. Here she entertained guests from around the world, who
were brought up the long drive from the Intervale train station by a team of four bay
horses and a coach!

IN FALL- Right after Labor Day, the air changes, becoming
a little crisper. Trees high on the mountains start to change color, and maples that edge
wetlands are scarlet beacons signaling the new season. The season starts quietly. The
first two weeks of September have a leisurely pace all their own, but then with the
explosion of color, the pace quickens until Columbus Day, the season's traditional close.
But don't be fooled: many years the best times in fall are those last treasured weeks
before November. People come from all over the globe at this time of year: they know, nowhere in the world is fall foliage more spectacular than in the White Mountains and Mt. Washington Valley. Here the vibrant yellows, vivid oranges and fiery rich reds light up the mountainsides and valleys, making each scenic view more beautiful than the last. So get out and take a scenic drive- there are loads of scenic byways and country roads to explore. Or what about a hayride or horseback ride? There are mountain trails and country roads for biking, and hiking and easy walking trails that take you to mountaintop outlooks and valley views. Fall may be the most event-filled season in the Valley, so come for Oktoberfest, the White Mountains Jazz Blues Festival or Mud Bowl, football played in the mud that's like nothing you've ever seen before! With a backdrop of fall's fantastic scenery, any of these events are an invigorating way to spend time in the fresh air. We know you'll fall for this season. It's one of the most popular times of the year to visit the Valley, so we encourage you to make your reservations early! |
ANY OTHER TIME...
