Home remodeling is a big business. According to a recent survey by the US Census Bureau, Americans spent almost $200 billion on home improvements in 2005-2006.

Most improvements don't return 100 percent on the dollar. In a cost-versus-value report, Remodeling magazine compiled a list of top home improvements based on the percentage return of investment. Recoup costs vary by area and greater returns can be gained the longer the owner lives in the house. Here are some improvements and estimated costs and recoup percentages:
